Description
This is digital library of map data covering the entire world (Digital Map of the World). The data is in ESRI Shapefile format and can be viewed with any software that can handle shapefiles, for example Arcview, ArcGIS, Spatially Away Map Suite etc..
The data comes from the VMap0 dataset released by the US goverment. This data covers the whole world and contains a huge number of layers including everything from coastlines to power stations, populated areas, oil wells, vegetation and roads. But unfortunately the original dataset is incredibly painful to use because of its strange naming convention and file structure.
That is why we decided to convert it to ESRI Shapefile format and make it available to the general public in the form of wshplib. Most modern GIS programs can read shapefiles and this makes it very easy to use the libraries.
Four Libraries covering the entire world
Like the original VMap0, wshplib is divided into four libraries based on geographic areas. The above map shows these coverage areas in different colours. Each library can be purchased separately or you can buy the whole set at a discounted price. You can buy any of these libraries using credit card transaction via our Esellerate store. Smaller libraries covering continents
In many cases it is desirable to have smaller shape files that only covers specific continents. Therefore we have decided to break create smaller shapefiles that only covers specific countries or areas. Please note that these libraries contains exactly the same information than the four continental libraries, but only covers the area of the continents specified. (Please look at screenshots to see examples of coverage)

Therefore we have decided to break create smaller shapefiles that only covers specific countries or areas. Please note that these libraries contains exactly the same information than the four continental libraries, but only covers the area of the country specified.

As you may have noticed, we do not have have custom small libraries covering each and every single country in the world. But it is possible to order a full set of library layers for ANY COUNTRY/AREA. Map Layers
The library for each region consist of many layers covering Transport, Population, Boundaries, Hydrographic, Marine, Elevation, Industry, Physiography etc. More details of the various layers.
Data Source Limitations
Since this library basically consists of VMap0 data that has been converted to shapefile format, the same inaccuracies and limitations that applies to VMap0, also applies to these data files. Please consult the VMap0 source files in order to establish details on the limitations.
Each shapefile consist of three files, namely *.shp,*.shx and*.dbf.
