Getting SurveyArea to work with your GPS

This page describes how to set up SurveyArea3 to work with your GPS.

Step 1 :  If you are using a Bluetooth GPS, please refer first to the section named Connecting a bluetooth GPS to Pocket PC WM 2005.

Step 2 : Assuming you have already configured your GPS as described in Step 1, you can now proceed to start SurveyArea3 and select the GPS settings tab. First Select the "Settings" tab in the bottom of the screen and then select "GPS Settings in the row just above that.

The Following criteria applies here:

Minimum Speed This is the minimum speed that you must travel at in order for the application to accept GPS measurements.  It is good practice to set a minimum speed of about 5km/h or so in order to minimize the effects of GPS drift.  If you select 0 km/h as shown here the application will register GPS drift even when the GPS is not even moving.
Minimum DOP DOP = Dilution of Precision.   The lower the number the better.   Select a number here allows you to ensure no GPS measurements will be accepted unless the DOP is better than specified.
Port This selects the communications port where the GPS is connected.
Baud Selects the baud rate at which the GPS works.  Most serial GPS devices uses 4800 baud, but in the case of Bluetooth GPS's you can usually select any baudrate.
3D Fix This shows the status of the GPS connection or GPS fix.  If successfully connected and the GPS has got a good fix you should see the words "3D Fix".  Otherwise it will tell you that the GPS does not have a fix or is not connected.
Connect Button Connects the application with the GPS
Disconnect Button Disconnects the GPS

All settings will be remembered by the application when you exit.   Each time you start the application the last used setting will be automatically applied.

If you want to confirm that your GPS is working correctly with the program, please select the GPS tab.  This will look something like this:

You can now proceed to set up the email settings.
