Connecting a bluetooth GPS to your Pocket PC WM 2005

This page describes how to successfully connect your Bluetooth GPS to your Pocket PC in order to use it with SurveyArea3.

Step 1 : Turn your BT GPS on and place it about a meter or so from your Pocket PC.

Step 2 : Click on the small Bluetooth icon in the botton right corner of your PPC main screen.

Step 3 : Make sure BT is turned on by checking that the appropriate checkbox is ticked as shown here:

Step 4 : Select the Devices tab.

Step 5 : Click on "New Partnership".  This will bring up a list of GPS devices in range and your BT GPS should be amongst these.

Step 6 : Select your GPS and click on Next.  At this stage you will most likely be asked to enter the passkey for your GPS at this stage.  The passkey differs between various GPS devices.  In my case, I used an Emtac Trine GPS and the passkey for my GPS is "0183".   If you do not know which passkey to use with your particular GPS then please check if your GPS is listed in this list of Bluetooth GPS passkeys

Step 6 : If the passkey that you supplied was accepted, your will see a list of services offered by the GPS.  Select Serial Port and click Save.

Step 7 : Select the "Com Ports" tab and click on "New Outgoing Port".

Step 8 : Select the GPS and click Next.

Step 9 : You can now pick which Com port will be used for the connection.  It is best to leave this as defaults.  Just click on finish.

Step 10 :  If you now see a screen as below, you have successfully added your BT GPS.

NB : Remember the COM port number (for example COM7).  You are now ready for setting up SurveyArea3 to work with your GPS.

The following additional steps are highly recommended if you do not want to repeat above mentioned steps every time that you use the program.

Addional steps : Setting up the GPS Intermediate Driver

Step 11 : Go to Start -> Settings ->System and click on the GPS icon as shown below:

Step 12 : Select GPD7

Step 13 : Click on the Hardware tab and select COM7.  Then click on "ok" in the top right corner.

Step 14 : Now open SurveyArea3, go to GPS settings and select COM7:

Step 15 :  Wait until the GPS obtained a stable 3D fix before you start using SurveyArea3

Special tip for people using the Garmin Mobile 10 Bluetooth GPS:

Someone using a Garmin Mobile 10 GPS told me that when you set up the port for the Garmin Mobile 10 it defaults com port to Com0.    It seems that part of the problem is that the Garmin Mobile 10 does not require you to pair the device and set up a port, they have something in the code for the Mobile XT mapping software that allows it to connect to the receiver. You might want to try to delete and add the mobile 10 receiver and try choosing another com port.  Or just try finding a different open port like for example COM9. Then go to SurveyArea3 and see if it connects.
