The first screen you will see is the activation screen. If you just want to test the program before buying, then click on the “Demo Mode” button. Otherwise enter your key and click on apply. Once registered you will no longer see this screen upon startup.
Demo version limitations

Screen 1 – Settings
On this screen you can choose what measuring units for Area, Speed, Distance and Height. You can also set a minimum distance between measurements in meters. For example if you choose 10m meters then each measurement will be spaced at least
100m apart.
It is recommended that you set a minimum speed of 0.5
(km/h). Most GPS devices are more accurate when making
measurements while moving. But remember, no measurements will
be made unless you are physically moving around.
New – Start new measurement
Exit – Stop the program
Quick Start – Start the GPS and start measuring immediately.
|
|
 |
Screen 2 –DOP
On the screen you can set which Dilution of Precision to
control the accuracy of the measurements
VDOP - Verticial Dilution of Precsision
HDOP - Horizontal Dilution of Precsision
By default maximum values for HDOP and VDOP are automatically selected. |
|
 |
Screen 3 – GPS
This screen is where you connect to your GPS. If you know the port number and baudrate of your GPS then set it up here. Otherwise leave it on Auto to automatically detect your
GPS.
Above the Port and Baud selectors, you see the status of the GPS fix and how many satellites are detected.
Note : When you exit the program, it will save the values you selected so that you can connect more quickly next time you use the
program. |
|
 |
Screen 4 –Area
This is the screen where actual measurements are made. The area is displayed in real time while you are measuring, but only when you approach the starting point will it be accurate.
The arrow shows which direction you are moving and your current position on the map.
When you stop you will see a red cross.
Points – number of measured point
Grid – Distance between grid lines
Distance – Distance of the outer perimeter traveled during
measurement.
Zoom function – In the top right hand corner are zoom buttons to make the scale of the map larger or
smaller.
Auto – Automatic mode
Man – Manual mode. (press button for each measurement
point)
User – User entry mode. The user can enter values for lat and long instead of getting the values from the GPS.
|
|
 |
Screen 5 – File Area
This screen area allows you to save or load your measurements.
Measurements are saved in normal ascii text format in a directory called “Program Files/Survey
Area/saved”
A default name based on time and date are automatically assigned to the file, but you can use any name you
like.
When you load or delete a file you will see a list of the files previously saved. Click on any one to load or delete it. |
|
 |
Export
You can export measurements directly in ESRI Shapefile format. A text file with contents similar to picture that describes the measurement will also be saved along with the shapefile.
The *.shp, *.dbx and *.shx files are saved in “Program Files/SureveyArea/exports/<filename>”
Use any program capable of importing shapefiles (for example ArcView) to view to
shapefiles.
Note : In demo mode the export function is disabled. |
|
 |
Exports Directory
Exported Shapefiles can be transferred from the PPC to a normal PC by using Windows Explorer to navigate to the right
directory.
Each export is saved in it own directory based on the date or the filename chosen. |
|
 |
Screen 6 – Data
This screens function is to allow you to see the GPS measurements. Units for Altitude, Speed, Heading and Compass are in the units selected on Screen
1.
Note : Measurements are only possible while Screen 4 is displayed. When you select any other screen no more points are added to the measurements until you return to screen 4. You can always hear when measurements are made by the beep sound each time a point is added. |

It is possible to upload the shapefile that you created with SurveyArea to our website and display the track on a GoogleMap satellite image or map.
The link is http://www.wildsoft.org/surveyarea/map/map.aspx
On this site you can upload your shapefile and see it drawn on top of a google
map. In this nice example I uploaded a shapefile that contained country borders
of the entire African continent. But it works equilly well for shapefile
that covers only a very small area as well.
