Case study for EasyAcreage

Using Google Earth to calculate area of a tennis court

Testing the accuracy of measuring the area of a tennis court using Google Earth and EasyAcreage

In order to test how accurate one can measure a field using Google Earth and EasyAcreage, it makes sense to measure a know area.   In this case we chose a tennis court which we know has a dimension of 23.722 x 10.972 meters.   It is easy to calculate that this should give us 260.8 square meters and a circumference of 69.488

The screenshot below show how I marked the tennis court in Google Earth.   If you download the KML file that I used in my measurement, you can easily repeat the test yourself.  Use this link to get the KML file : Wimbledon tennis court.kml

Measurement results:

  Expected Measured Error (%)
Area 260.8 square meters 264.04 square meters 1 %
Circumference distance 69.488 meters 69.8 meters 0.4%

Conclusion:

You can expect pretty good results, especially if the area that you wish to measure is displayed in good resolution on Google Earth.  This should be more than good enough for the average farmer etc that just wish to know the approximate size of a piece of land.  But I should stress that this method of measurement can not replace proper surveying methods, and in case of official issue or land disputes, it is always better to consult a proper surveyer to verify your measurements.
